The backlog of those waiting for their benefits has been on the uprise for years, with the average wait time for benefits skyrocketing to 923 days by the end of 2013. Many were simply not getting the treatment they needed.

Every day, we see more veterans come back home with mental illness. Unfortunately, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and alcohol misuse and more have been all too common. A new study from General Hospital Psychiatry has found that veterans who receive mental health care screenings during their primary care visits are likely getting better follow-up care. However, the study also found that getting this care via veterans benefits could be much improved.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is going through some hard times right now, as their former leader Eric Shinseki recently stepped down. However, no one is going through as hard of a time as the veterans awaiting their VA benefits. According to an internal report released this week, approximately 100,000 veterans across the country are facing long waiting periods to see doctors.
