There are many children across the United States who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. In fact, S. Evelyn Stewart, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, wrote on the International OCD Foundation Scientific Advisory Board’s website that one in every 200 children are impacted by OCD. This can mean problems at school, disrupted routines, problems with self-esteem and anger management issues, all of which can be debilitating to developing children.

Six percent of the population suffers from serious mental illness

Mental illnesses are often overlooked in modern society. While people have gotten better about going to doctors for issues such as anxiety, depression and other mental disorders, they often go unreported. However, many of these serious illnesses could be bad enough to stop an individual from working and could net them disability benefits from the Social Security Administration.

Children with oppositional defiant disorder can quality for disability

 Kids that show a consistent pattern of tantrums, arguing, anger and disruptive behavior may have more going on than simply a childhood phase. The Mayo Clinic said this could be oppositional defiant disorder, which can be considered a disability qualifying benefit by the Social Security Administration in some cases. Treatment of ODD will involve therapy, training and perhaps even medication, so monetary assistance from the SSA would definitely not hurt.

Q&A: Reports on Social Security disability can often be misleading

A report earlier this month by television newsmagazine 60 Minutes looked at the Social Security disability programs. Instead of portraying an even-keeled look at the modern system, the broadcast was biased and anecdote-based, relying on rare cases of judges and lawyers who try to defraud the system. Seemingly no attempt was made to get comment from the Social Security Administration and no recipients of SSD payments were interviewed.

Diabetes can be debilitating in the long-term

Those suffering from diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, have a lot that needs to be taken care of and guarded against. Debilitating symptoms such as neuropathy and kidney disease can be extremely harmful and perhaps even life threatening to the point where many may not be able to work a job.
