Congress looking into children’s Social Security disability

After an article published in the Boston Globe reported that some parents may misuse or create disability qualifying benefits to receive payments from the Social Security Administration, Congress has begun a probe into to the children’s benefits program, according to an article printed this fall by Disability Scoop.

While there may be some misuse by parents, make no mistake that many children are affected by disabilities every day. Daniel Bertino of the Government Accountability Office is quoted by the website as saying it may be complex to figure out what is real and what is not as far as mental impairments such as Autism and cerebral palsy is concerned.

“Accurately diagnosing some types of mental impairments is a complex and often subjective process for (the Social Security Administration), which can sometimes be vulnerable to fraud and abuse,” Bertoni said, according to Disability Scoop. A full GAO report on the matter will be delivered in April.

Children who are afflicted with mental and/or physical illness and apply for disability benefits have a greater chance of approval for their claim if they are represented by an experienced Social Security disability lawyer. It is important that appropriate medical evidence be gathered and submitted to the SSA. The law offices of Harold W Conick and Associates are skilled in successfully preparing and presenting children’s disability cases.
